This week has seen 2 of our umpires take part in the Australian School Sports carnival being held in Geelong. Will Ross (Field) and Daniel Robinson (boundary) are a couple of our up and coming umpires who were selected to take part in this weeklong event.
This carnival sees the best School age players and umpires from across the country participate in what is viewed as a “pathway” to higher level squads, TAC Development squads for the players and V’Line Umpiring Academy for the umpires. I was fortunate enough to participate in this carnival back in 2002 and was able to share my experience with 30 umpires taking part. I went back through the team lists one weekend when I was back home in Warrnambool and noticed that some of the Games biggest names took part that year. Name such as Buddy Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Brett Deledio, Travis Cloke all played but interestingly Buddy was not a player who stood out at that time. But we all know now how much of a gun he has become.
In the Lead up to Finals I will be highlighting some of our umpires who have either just got in to the game or been long serving members. This week’s profile umpire is on Peter Elliott. In my time with the Geelong Umpire Pete has been one of the leaders on and off the track. His work ethic and commitment cannot be faulted and is heading in the right direction heading in to finals.

In umpiring when an interesting or unique situation comes up in a game we call it a “Blue Mooner”. Each week in this article I will ask a “Blue Mooner” question for you to answer. To find out the answer all you need to do is go to the Geelong Umpires website, www.gful.com.au, and look at “What’s your Decision” under the Coaching Information Tab. This week’s question is?
A Barwon Heads player is awarded a free kick for an out of bounds on the full. When kicking the ball in the football fails to come back into play but goes over the fence 40 metres down the ground. What is your Decision?
Remember to head to the website or check out next week’s article for the answer.
Last Week’s Question was:
A report can be made during a match, or on the day of the match and with the immediate proximity or the arena. What is that measurement?
Answer is within 500m of where the match was played
If you are interested in umpiring contact the Geelong Umpires on 03 5229 8599 or get down to the umpires’ rooms at Kardinia Park on a Monday or Wednesday from 4.30 pm onwards. Further information can be found on our brand new Geelong Umpires website. www.gful.com.au .
