Congratulations to all the umpires, players and support staff who participated in last weekend’s Worksafe Country Championships. The Geelong Umpires were lucky enough to have 21 umpires and 6 coaches involved in games across the weekend which is a fantastic achievement by all. These umpires are all part of AFL Victoria’s V/Line Academy which is a talent pathway for Umpires who are capable of umpiring the highest level of Football outside of the VFL. To be considered umpires are judged on their current form along with their attendance to coaching and skill sessions. The Geelong Umpires members selected were: Field Umpires Sam Chaston & Steve Guarnaccia (GFL v GVFL), Paul McElhinney, Davin Reid, Nick Murnane (Nth Central FL v GDFL) Jack Abrehart, Tom Abrehart and Lachlan Rooke (Nth Central FL v GDFL u/18’s). Late last week one of our Life Members and Most Outstanding Goal Umpire Award winner, Dennis Felder, passed away. Dennis Started umpiring in 1978 as a goal umpire finishing up in 1998 after 718 games including 8 Senior Grand Finals (3 GFL, 3 BFL & 2 GDFL) along with 94 finals. He then went on to coach the Boundary Umpires Squad from 1999 through to 2004. Dennis was inducted as a Life member in 2000 and will be missed by all who he umpired with and coached during his career. Our thoughts are with his family at this time and we will be wearing black arm bands as a mark of respect to Dennis.
In umpiring when an interesting or unique situation comes up in a game we call it a “Blue Mooner”. Each week in this article I will ask a “Blue Mooner” question for you to answer. To find out the answer all you need to do is go to the Geelong Umpires website, www.gful.com.au, and look at “What’s your Decision” under the Coaching Information Tab. This week’s question is?
A defender takes a mark near the goals, he then walks over the goal line. The player then plays on between the Goal and Behind posts. What is your decision?
Remember to head to the website or check out next week’s article for the answer.
Last Week’s Question was:
At a centre bounce, a boundary umpire pays a centre square infringement against the Newtown wingman. The ball goes straight to the St Albans rover from the ruck contest and he is clear to take advantage. Can he take the advantage? What is your decision?
Answer is No.
