With only the GDFL and a handful of Colts games last weekend, you would have noticed a lot of our umpires running around across all games over the weekend. We had some of our experienced umpires running with 1st and 2nd year umpires to help develop their skills leading in to the later part of the season. It has been great to see some of our guys put their hand up to double or triple up on games to ensure we are helping our new umpires out to improve and learn when they are getting started.

Also last weekend we had 2 of our umpires selected for AFL Victoria Representative matches that were held in Bendigo. Field Umpire Steve Guarnaccia, who umpired the AFL Vic Country V VAFA and Goal umpire Cody Espig, AFL Vic Country 2 v VAFA 2, were selected to take part in these games after outstanding performances earlier in the year. Both of these guys are part of the AFL Victoria’s V’Line Umpiring program which provides umpires from across Victoria the opportunity to gain extra skills and training to improve their umpiring. Steve used to play football for Bell Park and his feel and knowledge of the game is one of his strengths. Cody is one of our young guns coming through the ranks and at the young age of just 16, he has already umpired 2 GDFL Senior Grand Finals, 2013 & 2014. Cody was also selected to take part in AFL Victoria’s Umpire Leadership Program which ran in the lead up to the weekend. To be selected in this program you need to show potential and the drive to reach the next level in their umpiring career. Cody was able to experience training session with the AFL and VFL Umpires, charity work with the Salvation Army and presentations about Nutrition, training and improving their leadership skills.  From all reports the boys did a great job in trying conditions and behalf of all our members we congratulate them on their appointment.

In umpiring when an interesting or unique situation comes up in a game we call it a “Blue Mooner”. Each week in this article I will ask a “Blue Mooner” question for you to answer. To find out the answer all you need to do is go to the Geelong Umpires website, www.gful.com.au, and look at “What’s your Decision” under the Coaching Information Tab. This week’s question is?

A report can be made during a match, or on the day of the match and with the immediate proximity or the arena. What is that measurement?

Remember to head to the website or check out next week’s article for the answer.

Last Week’s Question was:

A Corio Defender takes a mark between the goal and point post, the player walks over the scoring line to take his kick. He then kicks the football in to the Goal Post but the ball still comes in to play. What is your decision?

Answer is the Corio Player takes the kick again.

If you are interested in umpiring contact the Geelong Umpires on 03 5229 8599 or get down to the umpires’ rooms at Kardinia Park on a Monday or Wednesday from 4.30 pm onwards. Further information can be found on our brand new Geelong Umpires website. www.gful.com.au .

Remember to say something nice to the Umpires this weekend as they are giving it their all!
