On behalf of the Board of Management and all members we send our deepest condolences to Phil Walsh’s family and friends. What we saw with clubs linking arms in a circle after games on the weekend was a powerful.

I was fortunate enough to meet Phil earlier this year for a pre season training season over in Adelaide. The thing that struck me straight away was his professionalism towards training. He had his boys up and going for an 8:30am scratch match and demanded excellence during that session. The other was that you could tell he was a great leader and the boys where “buying in” to every word he said. It was a bit daunting turning up to an interstate club visit by myself but Phil was the first person to come up to me and say hello and ask where I was from and what I did. Phil’s passion and respect for the game could never be doubted and that is why he will be remembered forever for that.

Last week we had 2 first gamers on the boundary at North Shore for the colts. It is not uncommon for us to have debutantes running each week but this game was special because of who we had appointed.  Jaward Hassan Zada and Javid Alizada, pictured above, were refugees from Afghanistan who 2 years ago jumped on a boat as 16 year olds and travelled 11,000km to find a better life. They spent months at Christmas Island before being transferred to Perth and then moving to Geelong. The greatest thing that these boys have shown me is their eagerness to learn the game of AFL and how excited they are to be involved in our organisation. We pride ourselves on giving everyone, no matter your background, heritage, size or age an opportunity to be involved in the greatest game in the world. These boys could be the start of something special for not only us but football in this region.

In umpiring when an interesting or unique situation comes up in a game we call it a “Blue Mooner”. Each week in this article I will ask a “Blue Mooner” question for you to answer. To find out the answer all you need to do is go to the Geelong Umpires website, www.gful.com.au, and look at “What’s your Decision” under the Coaching Information Tab. This week’s question is?

A Corio Defender takes a mark between the goal and point post, the player walks over the scoring line to take his kick. He then kicks the football in to the Goal Post but the ball still comes in to play. What is your decision?

Remember to head to the website or check out next week’s article for the answer.

Last Week’s Question was:

At a centre bounce, a centre square infringement is paid against the South Barwon Half Forward, however, the ball goes straight to the Leopold rover from the ruck contest and he is the clear to play on and take the advantage. Can He? What is your decision?

Answer is No Advantage, Free Kick taken at centre circle by closest player.
