Did you know that to cover every single game of Football across the Geelong Region with the bare minimum, 2 field, 2 boundary and 2 Goal umpires, we would need over 700 umpires each week! Currently our membership is 379, which is the highest it has ever been in our 80 year history.
The Geelong Umpires are always on the lookout for more umpires as currently we rely on our members running multiple games a weekend to make sure there are umpires at most games of football. This is great for their bank balance but we don’t want to run these guys in to the ground either. Last week were had 9 people come in and sign up to umpire which is fantastic and a lot of our recruiting success needs to given to our current umpires. Around 80% of new recruits we have walk through our door are friends of umpires, 15% are current or past players and 5% are people who are just interested in becoming involved in footy. At the end of last season the Geelong Umpires goal for the 2015 is to grow our membership numbers to 400 and I have a feeling we are going to give it a decent crack at achieving that number.
TO ALL PAST AND PRESENT UMPIRES!
The Geelong Football Umpires’ League will celebrate their 80th year of service to local football since being established in 1935. To celebrate this milestone the Board of Management has a weekend of activities for all past and present umpires to attend.
An informal Cocktail Party on Saturday 27 June at Buckley’s Entertainment Centre will be a night to reminisce about your era of involvement with the GFUL and to acknowledge the rising stars that are umpiring today.
Sunday 28 June will be a free Family Day BBQ at the GFUL Rooms with past Grand Finals on the big screen, photo board, uniform archive and a jumping castle for the kids.
The Board of Management warmly invite all former and current umpires, along with their family and friends to join us for this weekend of celebration.
RSVP is required for both functions by Friday 19 June.
Cocktail party, $30.00 per person (drinks at bar prices) Tickets must prepaid and are available from Geelong Umpires General Manager.
In umpiring when an interesting or unique situation comes up in a game we call it a “Blue Mooner”. Each week in this article I will ask a “Blue Mooner” question for you to answer. To find out the answer all you need to do is go to the Geelong Umpires website, www.gful.com.au, and look at “What’s your Decision” under the Coaching Information Tab. This week’s question is?
A Lara player kicks the ball off the ground towards his goals and hits his teams runner on the leg. The ball defects through for a point. What is your decision?
Remember to head to the website or check out next week’s article for the answer.
Last Week’s Question was:
A defender takes a mark near the goals, he then walks over the goal line. The player then plays on between the Goal and Behind posts. What is your decision?
Answer is a behind.
If you are interested in umpiring contact the Geelong Umpires on 03 5229 8599 or get down to the umpires’ rooms at Kardinia Park on a Monday or Wednesday from 4.30 pm onwards. Further information can be found on our brand new Geelong Umpires website. www.gful.com.au .
Remember to say something nice to the Umpires this weekend as they are giving it their all!
