WHISTLE BLOWER 2015 - Celebrating 80 Years of Umpiring

29/6/2015

This Weekend the Geelong Umpires celebrate their 80th Anniversary as an organisation and officiating football in the Geelong Region. From humble beginnings of five men seated on fruit boxes in the local pub back in 1935, to becoming one of the strongest umpiring organisations in Australia, we say thank you to all of our past and present umpires who have donned the white, orange and now yellow uniform.
Our Umpires this week have attended training session with nearly all clubs across the region to help build player and umpires relationships as well as promoting the message of umpiring to the clubs.  We will be celebrating this fantastic occasion with a function at Buckleys Entertainment Centre Saturday Night and also a Family Day on Sunday at the rooms. All past and present umpires are invited to attend.

In our 80 year history we have had many great umpires come through our door and go on to officiate at the highest level. Guys like Brett Allen, Shaun Ryan and Adam Wojcik who have umpired that last day in September, Brett has done 7 AFL Grand Finals and 347 games, Shaun has done 5 and 215 games and Adam has done 1 in his 125 game career. Other former members to umpire at the highest level were Geoff Morrow, 67 AFL Games, Jason Armstrong 112 games, Aaron Little 59 games, Adrian Wilson 16 games, Justin Morris 45 games, Lloyd Fisk 29 games, and Stephen Williams umpiring 98 games. We also currently have 5 umpires on the VFL list being Jake Robertson, Simon Blight, Adam Bell, Jaymee Guy and Paul Trotter. I know this number will continue to grow as we have some exciting youngsters coming through our ranks and making their mark at senior level football.

In umpiring when an interesting or unique situation comes up in a game we call it a “Blue Mooner”. Each week in this article I will ask a “Blue Mooner” question for you to answer. To find out the answer all you need to do is go to the Geelong Umpires website, www.gful.com.au, and look at “What’s your Decision” under the Coaching Information Tab. This week’s question is?

A goal umpire is in the opinion that a goal has occurred, however the Field umpire fails to notice and pays a free kick to the Bell Park back Pocket player. The Goal umpire then runs out to the field umpire and informs him of the score.  What is your decision?

Remember to head to the website or check out next week’s article for the answer.

Last Week’s Question was:

After the ball has crossed the line for a Lara Goal, and prior to the field umpire giving the all clear, a St Mary’s player is pushed in to the behind post. What happens next?  What is your decision?

Answer is all clear for a goal then free kick at the top of the Goal Square

If you are interested in umpiring contact the Geelong Umpires on 03 5229 8599 or get down to the umpires’ rooms at Kardinia Park on a Monday or Wednesday from 4.30 pm onwards. Further information can be found on our brand new Geelong Umpires website. www.gful.com.au .
