They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we Forget.

I’m lucky in my role with the Geelong Umpires to see the opportunities for our younger members to stand up when needed for local footy. Last week we had a number of our teenage boundary umpires step up to do senior games across the region. These guys usually go unnoticed on match day but play a vital role in what can be a thankless task. Our guys will sometime cover around 15km a game which is just as much running as what a midfielder would do. Some of our guys are doing 2 games a weekend which shows the character and strength of some of our youngest members. At the other end of the scale one of our oldest boundary umpires, Roy Lawrence, had a massive weekend by umpiring a senior game on the Saturday, covering 14km at Drysdale, then backing up on Sunday doing the Geelong Half Marathon. Roy completed the half marathon in less than 2 hours which was a fantastic achievement.
You would assume that for a Goal Umpire that one of their most important items in their bag is their flags. Now after a game you are sometimes in a rush to get home which was the case for Sam Moerenhout. Usually you would notice if you were missing your 4 sticks but luckily for Sam one of his teammate picked them up and got them back to him asap. Young Boundary umpire Flynn Drapper forgot his sweatbands and asked his colleges if anyone had any spares. Damian McMaster came to the rescue with some spares that had been in his bag un washed for the last couple of weeks. Let’s just say Flynn won’t be forgetting his sweat bands next time! Thanks also must go out to Goal umpire Coaches Allan Grant and Ray Menzies for running the bar and nibbles on Saturday night.
In umpiring when an interesting or unique situation comes up in a game we call it a “Blue Mooner”. Each week in this article I will ask a “Blue Mooner” question for you to answer. To find out the answer all you need to do is go to the Geelong Umpires website, www.gful.com.au, and look at “What’s your Decision” under the Coaching Information Tab. This week’s question is?
A player whilst taking a mark, 2 seconds prior to the siren, is accidentally contacted high by his team mate causing a blood nose. Is he able to take his kick after the siren? What is your decision?
Remember to head to the website or check out next week’s article for the answer.
Last Week’s Question was:
The Full Back is kicking the ball in after a behind, he kicks the ball to himself clear of hand and foot, then handballs the ball directly over the boundary line. What is your decision?
Answer is Deliberate out of Bounds.
