My Career as a Goal Umpire - Jay Ennor

Age: Currently 27 & 6 months
Started: 2015
In 2015 I was introduced to a world of umpiring when my case worker Lauren suggested to me I should give umpiring a try in which the role of field umpire would be a good opportunity for me.
With Lauren's support and accompanying me to umpire training I was able to get my certificate one and officially start umpiring weekends.
In the same year I umpired in the Encompass Cup for the Under 14's age group.

During the following years I have become independent in being able to get myself to umpiring and training without support and have also umpired football games by myself if the other umpire has been unable to attend on short notice.
I really enjoy the opportunities to be a field umpire and see it as an ongoing career option for me well into my 80's hopefully and it helps me look after my health because it is good to be fit and healthy.

Jay was the first person that approached my office and greeted me with open arms. He always has the courtesy of popping his head in asking if there is anything he could do for me with a great smile.

For some of the players running around today it may be the highlight of their career to play finals and hopefully win a premiership. It is a prestigious appointment to be selected for a final or grand final as an umpire as it is a reward for not only the hard work they put in on match day, training and recovery sessions throughout the year but shows great faith the coaching panel have in the umpires taking part on the big day.

I had the pleasure last weekend to go out to Modewarre and watch some of our up and coming Umpires on our Development list officiate in Junior Grand Finals. Even though it may have been a bit cold I had a fantastic day along with a large crowd in attendance.

Whistle Blower 2015 - What type of supporter are you?

With finals just around the corner I came across a post of Facebook late last week from the South Metro Junior Football Umpires League. The post had a picture of a young boy, 13-14 years old who plays for his local team before or after umpiring, and like most kids is not keen on being abused by players, officials or spectators!

PictureGames Record Holder and Life Member Noel Hooper with the very first whistle ever used in a game of Football.
Last Wednesday the Geelong Umpires celebrated their Life Members night with close to 100 past and present members in attendance. For me this is one of the best nights of the year as I get the chance to speak to some of our greatest ever umpires and relive some of the great stories from their time in Umpiring.
