Rounds 1 of the Bellarine and Geelong & District Football Leagues has seen several senior debuts for young GFUL umpires.
21 year old Jacqui Ginn, is one of the Senior Field Umpires appointed to the G&DFL “Match of the Round”, Corio v Bell Post Hill at Corio. Jacqui is a member of the VCFL Field Umpire Academy and gets her opportunity after a solid pre-season and on the back of her success at the 2007 National Women’s Football Championships in Canberra last year. Jacqui will be supported and assisted in her debut game by a couple of old experienced war horses in Damian McMaster and Steve Sirotjuk, who transferred to the GFUL from the AFLACT Umpires last year.
18 year old Trent Ververs, son of Jack, will also make his senior Field Umpire debut in the Bellarine “Match of the Round”, Anglesea v Portarlington at Anglesea. Trent has excelled in pre-season practiced matches and deserves his opportunity at senior level. He will be also be partnered by a couple of very experienced senior umpires in Rod McKenzie and Craig Taylor.
16 year old Kaitlyn Marriner, has two older brothers who run as senior boundary umpires and has always aspired to achieve that level as a Boundary Umpire also.
All three Marriners ran in a senior practice match last weekend and Kaitlyn showed enough to warrant senior selection in her own right this week.
Congratulations to all three and hopefully today will be the start of some long term careers as GFUL senior umpires.
