Two former GFUL Goal Umpires have been rewarded for their performances throughout the 2007 season with Grand Final appointments. Adam Wojcik, in keeping with the very strong Geelong flavour leading up to the AFL Grand Final, was fortunate enough to be involved in the the first leg of what all Geelong supporters hope will be a VFL/AFL double, with his appointment to the VFL Grand Final between Geelong and Coburg last Saturday.
Youngster, Stephen Williams, who only left the GFUL this year to try out for the VFL, has had immediate success by having already umpired a couple of senior VFL games and will stand between the posts in the TAC Cup Grand Final at the MCG in the curtain raiser to the AFL Grand Final blockbuster between Geelong and Port Adelaide. The hard luck story must be that of Jarrod King, who, like Stephen, is in his first year with the VFL and has also umpired at senior VFL level, was almost certain to be appointed to the TAC Cup Grand Final along with Stephen, but alas, an injury has deprived him of that opportunity. Congratulations to Adam on his VFL Senior Grand Final and to Stephen on his TAC Cup Grand Final appointment. We will all be able to witness his inimitable style and flawless technique on the big screen on Saturday morning. Commiserations to Jarrod, but there will be plenty more opportunities for someone of his talent in the future.
