WEEK 18
FROM THE WEEK END
Well the finals started on Saturday in the Bellarine Football League and the Juniors and what a terrible weekend weather wise it was. Bitterly cold and rain but we can’t complain because we were up behind the glass at Portarlington.
To Eddie and Gary Pearson I have to admit it was a very good ploy on Saturday morning getting me out on the ground and then standing looking at the posts waiting for the down pour to arrive, in which it did where as the result getting drenched
Both Mark and Myself were extremely happy of all the exhibitions that the Goal Umpires put in over the week end and I have also been informed the Goal Umpires in the Junior finals also performed really well.
CAN WE KEEP THIS GOING RIGHT TO THE END BETTER THAN THE OLYMPIC TEAM
This Tuesday night we expect all of you to be at training as it is a big night planned for you and us.
THURSDAY NIGHT
MINI GOLF WALLINGTON 5.30PM START
If you need a ride be there by 5.15pm as we will make sure that there are some car drivers to bring you down and back again
WEEK 17
FROM THE WEEK END
Well, the Goal Umpires have caught up to the Boundary Umpires and have gone wired for sound. It was trialed in to matches over the week end and the four goal umpires were very receptive to the innovation of being able to be instructed on the goal instead of waiting for the breaks. Thanks go to the four.
Mark, John and I spent the some time at the TAC match going over and refining the finals panels and we believe that we have the final solution of where you all have finished.
FINALS
Remember that we have 4 panels this year and they are for the following
Panel A Seniors
Panel B Reserves
Panel C U/18
Panel D U/14 & U/16
During the finals umpires can be rotated out of their panel to another panel but mainly they will remain in their panel
The Grand Finals are different as the best umpires are appointed to the 11 main finals starting from no.1 to no.22
Preparation for Finals
All Umpires should make themselves available to attend training for the remainder of the season and also make themselves to be available both Saturday and Sunday.
If an umpire makes a scoring mistake they can be demoted from the panel that they started off in and may loose their ranking, depending on the seriousness of the error.
BELLARINE FINALS START THIS WEEK
GEELONG JUNIOR FINALS START THIS WEEK ALSO.
On behalf of Mark, John and myself I wish you all the best in your quest to reach your aim that you sought for at the start of the season
To All “The Green Shirt Umpires” what a great year you all have had, all the best in your first finals series.
See on the track.

GOAL UMPIRE INSTRUCTIONS
WEEK 16
FROM THE WEEK END
Well, I actually Goal Umpired on Saturday morning at Lara with Mark in the field and I must at that I did muck up my first decision and according to Mark it looked so funny me trying to rectify my error, however, by putting into practice what I have been instructing you all to do with the zones it does make your job a lot easier and you are moving continuously.
Both Mark and myself ended u[p at St Marys’ where we observed Craig McMillan perform a positioning feat of his own and that is slipping down to all fours and kept looking up at the ball to see if it had gone over the line for a Goal. Well done Craig it was worth watching
James O’Flynn and Andrew Salter doing their first GFL Senior Game and their First ever Senior game well done to both of you
INSTRUCTION
This next area has never been changed so I would like you all to take notice
To give your indications you must come to the line and stand tall and with legs together and also when you are waving the flags.
There are no exceptions
LAST WEEK OF THE BELLARINE
This is the last week of the Bellarine Football League before they start their finals and Mark and myself have done the final rankings for the finals panels but, we are looking at fine tuning them this week
FINALS
As I stated last Thursday evening the finals will be split up into four groups Seniors, Reserves,u/18 and Juniors
So if you think you are in line for a finals spot it would be in your best interests to attend training on a Thursday night and make yourself available for the remainder of the year
THIS WEEK
WE hope to have all first year umpires officiating with their mentors in one game this week-end so it might mean that some of the more senior umpires will start off in the U/18 then will move to another venue to do a Seniors with another Mentor that has been doing seniors
See you at training
WEEK 15
A1
THE WEEK END THAT WAS
Well, Ray Stephenson and Craig McMillan did the TAC match at skilled starting at 11.30am on Saturday but I also appointed them to the Seniors at St Albans starting at 2.10pm, so the big question was, were they going to make the start or not of the Senior Game.
I went to St Albans to advise the two goalies doing the Reserves that they might be required to start the seniors until the other two arrive, well I stayed there the senior game started then the two from skilled arrive at 2.15pm and got on the ground at 2.20pm they would have been there at the start but they had two players taken off on stretcher at skilled which made their last quarter longer. Thanks Ray and Craig for the big effort on Saturday.
It was great to see the Goal Umpires turn up back at the rooms at Saturday night great effort but would like to see even more.
OBSERVATIONS
Well, with only John and myself observing we did not get around to seeing as many ass usual, and also from the week end Goal Umpires will not be getting observations/assessment forms from us but will get a verbal report.
RESERVE AND U/18 MATCHES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE HOME AND AWAY GAMES
As per the instruction given on Thursday night regarding waving off to the Scoreboard only in the Reserves and U/18’s at half time and full time
You walk up to the side of the ground wait for your partner then check your cards along with the scoreboard,
If the scoreboard is correct you do exactly the same procedure as you have been doing and that is to wave to the scoreboard saying it is correct.
If the scoreboard is incorrect then the following must be carried out
If the scores are within 6 points the difference then you must proceed to correct the scoreboard as per normal
If the scores are more than 6 points the difference and the scoreboard is incorrect then you proceed to walk off the ground without waving it correct.
At half time and you have walked off the ground without correcting the scoreboard and you are proceeding back out on the ground for the commencement of the 3rd quarter you are to walk onto the ground 20m look at the scoreboard and
If it has been corrected then you must wave towards the scoreboard to indicate scores are correct
If the scoreboard is still incorrect you must proceed over to the scoreboard and correct the scores then wave correct
Then proceed back to the centre of the ground then to you ends
At full time the scores are 6 points or less then you must correct the score board
If the scoreboard is more than 6points then you check your cards with your partner if incorrect then proceed to walk of the ground without waving to the scoreboard to say the sores are correct.
This is an instruction and must be adhered to
TWO WEEKS TO GO TO THE FINALS
Well this week end; you all should be umpiring no feeble excuses will be tolerated so make yourself available
Attendance at training is of utmost important from here on
Your performances will be under the scrutiny off more intense work that is you’re working of the zones, general positioning, and every other part of Goal Umpiring
See you at training

WEEK 19
WHAT HAPPENED
Well, the impossible happened on the week end, everything went pear shaped, with Umpires pulling out saying they can only do u/18 and some saying they haven’t got enough money to fill their car of petrol and others just will not budge to assist us with changes
A big thanks must go out to John Hilder for doing the impossible at last notice and that is going off at half time at East Geelong then travelling up to Hoppers Crossing to do and Exchange
At one stage by myself and Mark were looking at each other to see who was going to draw the straw to go their
My car was taken over by the no.2 as his wife likes it
Hannah Ryan doing her second game at Corio in the u/18’s and what a great job she did, all the correct positioning and indications and including her flag waving
Umpires coming off the ground into the rooms as they have had enough with the scoreboard being incorrect for the entire two games, all I ask for is that you put it down on your match report and also the field Umpires match report so the message will finally get thru to the Football Leagues that kids should not be doing the scoreboard
After talking to the group on Thursday night regarding the use of the Whistle for all Reserve Grade Games it was once again disappointing to see that goal umpires were not wearing the whistle in the game instead of being in their pockets
REMEMBER THAT THIS IS AN INSTRUCTION THAT YOU MUST WEAR YOUR WHISTLE ON YOUR HAND IN ALL THE RESERVE GRADE GAMES
We hope that all the exchanges went well for all our Goalies on the week end and they enjoyed the experience
FROM THE WEEK END
Current Umpires on the ground behind other Goal Umpires is not permitted except for the Coaching Staff and Mentors, as it looks like spectators on the ground.
FINALS NOT FAR AWAY
With the finals only a couple of weeks away Mark and myself have started looking at umpires to do finals and just see if we have you all in the correct positions so it would be a good idea if you do not make yourself unavailable for the remainder of the season
Don’t forget that we do the Junior finals also and you might find you are doubling up on the week ends
AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SHEPPARTON THIS WEEK
We wish David House the very best for the Championships in the Div one Competition and to Mark who is up their observing the championships.
See you at training
WEEK 14
A1.
THE GOOD
TAC Match at Skilled Stadium, a great display by the two Goal Umpires, David House and Rob Steel, Their positioning for dropping ball situations and also under the flight of the ball.
To Jake Brooks doing his first game at Sth Barwon, good job under the watchful eye of David House. Young Jake was also being watched by his whole family including dad Tony Field Umpire Coach Brooks and also the Chair Brendan Beveridge plus being on video
To Josh Neville for getting the video out of moth balls for the first time this year a really good job got some really great coaching shots of all three disciplines.
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
Goal Umpires not assisting Boundary Umpires,
Goal Umpires are to Assist The Boundary Umpires when the Ball is Close to the Boundary line up to 30 – 35 m around from the behind post.
If the Ball goes out of Bounds the Goal Umpire shall run over to assist raise his arm with the out of bounds indication, if the Boundary umpire does not acknowledge this then the Goal Umpire will move back and resume his normal working position, however, if the ball goes out on the full the Goal Umpire shall wait there until the Boundary Umpire acknowledges his indication as this is free kick.
Dropping ball situation close to line, the Goal umpire has to move quickly to be up on the Goal line to adjudicate if the ball has been touched before or after the Goal line, if the Goal Umpire has committed to go to the short side he must be aware that he could be squashed up against the Goal post so it is advisable for the Goal Umpire to assess whether he goes to the long or the short side, so that he is always in the best position to adjudicate.
Goal Umpires position when ball is in General Play.
All Goal Umpires should be facing the play directly so as to see where the ball is in play at all times it is not advisable to stand side onto play at any stage.
THE BAD
Kids sitting on the fence behind the Goals,
It is the Goal Umpires instruction that you must get everyone over the fence especially when it is happening in your work area
A1
WEEK 13
Well, with the Girls games on at Geelong Amos you nearly all got the week end off from being observed, however there were still three observers out watching and they were John Hilder , Paul Holmes and Steve McDonald.
Can I just get back to the Girls games and it was great to see Emma and Courtney out there strutting their stuff by themselves for the first time, and a good job was done by them.
We had Gwenda (auntie) Bell officiating in the Reserves match and her performance ok also.
The two young girls asked where Ralph was and unfortunately we told them that he had to umpire this week instead of Mentoring
We had another injury this week in John McGillvary who will be out for about three weeks sorry to hear about that John.
With the GDFL having a split round this week end please check where you are umpiring as you could be anywhere

Question time
Can anyone tell me if or how close are we at umpiring the AFL way?
How many new Goal Umpires this year?
Where do you rate yourself at the moment?
How do you think training is this year?
For the First year Goal Umpires and especially for you Marcus as I know you read this page, do you think the coaching staff are performing ok?
Do any of you want a games night ie. Mini Golf Bowls or even something different
See you at training this week

WEEK 12
FROM THE WEEK END
New Goal Umpire uniform worn by the two girls at Geelong amo’s in the u/18’s (lollipop rain jackets) where’s Harvey Whitcombe when you need him.
Young William Lane and Michael Vella doing their first Senior Games great to see another couple of first year Goal Umpires on the move up.
Steve McDonald doing his knee at St Mary’s in the Reserves hope to see back umpiring shortly and that the injury isn’t too bad
The Two Coaches at GWSC pondering who is going to go to St Mary’s to do the Game and then one decides the other leaves that venue too.
Good to see some of the Younger Goalies listening to advice about their own personnel appearance and having a hair cut
Goal coach getting rung up to say come and umpire as the person on the other end doesn’t want to umpire in the rain.
AN APPEAL TO ALL GOAL UMPIRES
If you have a white jacket and you are no longer using (I hope that you are not) could you please bring it down to the rooms as the first year Goal Umpires are struggling to get waterproof jackets.
FOR THE COMING WEEK
The Girls games next Saturday to the three females that are representing the GFUL Goal Umpires Gwenda, Emma and Courtney all the best have a great day
Once again it is great to see so many goalies turning up to training keep this up as we are having a great season so far, with 23 new goal umpires on the list,
For those first year goalies relief is on its way with some small orange jackets arriving by Thursday I think so then you can experience the cold in warm jackets
See you during the week
A1
WEEK 11
GOOD TO SEE
Goal Umpires getting up on the line to adjudicate dropping ball which is good to see and observe
32 umpires observed for the week end another great week end of observations
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
Position of flags on posts, where do you put them.
Once again for the 2nd week end running Goal Umpires having their flags in the incorrect position on the posts.
For Goal Flags they must be on the Right Hand side Goal Post and be placed at waist height with the behind flag up higher on the same post.
For the point flag on the left hand side goal post it needs to be at the same height as the point flag on the right hand side
Point flag Waving.
For waving a behind flag it is a matter of quickly moving to the either post to get the point flag and quickly taking it out of its holder then straight into the waving of the flag, then immediately putting the flag away in is holder then moving swiftly back from the post to decide where you have to position yourself.
Talking to Spectators behind the fence.
It is imperative that Goal Umpires do not take their eyes off play at all, that is not turning around to talk to spectators at all, you can still talk and be watching play at the same time but we would prefer that you do not talk to spectators at all as it does affect your concentration.
Entering and Leaving the Ground
All Goal Umpires are asked to be in step with each other, if you find that you are walking with a person who has a smaller step than yours adjust your step so that you are both in step together, as this is when the Goal Umpires are noticed more.
Dropping Ball
Ball dropping down in behind area and players are there you should endeavor to be up on the line to adjudicate or if you cannot get into the behind area place yourself in the goals and look thru to adjudicate.
THE BAD
Umpires that have to go to the pick up and do not notify other umpires that they are not going to pick up, this can cause some headaches and in fact you not being paid for the week end as the other umpires have notified Kev Mac they the goal Umpire did not arrive at pick up .
Please go as directed or notify one of the other umpires that is going to the pick up that you are going direct to ground
Failure to notify that you are not umpiring on the Saturday as you do not turn up to your appointed match, Once again please noitify myself or Kev Mac about your unavailability
Lets hope over the next couple of weeks things start to get better.
Don’t forget the next social night on the 28th June
A1
WEEK 10
GOOD TO SEE
Well, we have nearly reached the half way mark of the GFL and on last Saturday a total of 30 Goal Umpires were observed, not bad for a week end work, although it did keep us busy going from the various grounds, the Bellarine did not escape with a visit to three of its venues.
It is fantastic that the goalies have taken on board the use of their own match day form although some forget to bring them back, as this is one way that the football Leagues will be able to rectify the scoreboard and escort problems out along with the posts and padding.
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
Rumor has it that a Senior Goal umpire could not keep on his feet for a goal decision, but i must admit i was told he never took his eyes off the ball even thou he was heading face first into the turf.
John Phillips at Torquay on Saturday talk about work up a sweat he never stopped moving and even was jogging on the spot well done John, he said he might take up the Boundary.
Still at Torquay what a great scoreboard but during the first quarter of the senior match the score board went haywire get it right Torquay
Umpires that do not turn up to their games and do not notify that they are not umpiring what about the phone call
Leopold, the sand pits at both goal areas, what a disgrace for a GFL Venue they are asking for a goal umpire to have an injury, also spotted at the same venue a Goal Umpire more or less playing sand castles with his feet whilst umpiring
THE BAD FROM THE WEEK END
Well, for the next couple of weeks and especially on Thursday night at training the theme will be PRESENTATION as i had to witness a goal umpire not being prepared and when eventually arriving back at his game the uniform was not clean
Next week theme is PRESENTATION AND WILLBE DISCUSSED ON THURSDAY NIGHT AT TRAINING
A1
WEEK 9
GOOD TO SEE
Well, I won’t be talking much about the performances in this weeks notes, but I will just say that some of our first year Goal Umpires have exceeded our expectations and will be elevated to the Reserves and Seniors.
First Year umpires out shining our older goalies for getting up on the line for dropping ball situations
SOCIAL SCENE
What a great night Saturday night was for the Goal Umpires Social function
Firstly we should congratulate Debbie Cromer for organizing the meal and the kitchen staff for the great job they did.
To June Grossman and Ann-Mare Villanti for their terrific work in the kitchen also, the three ladies had been working in the kitchen preparing from 11.00am in the morning.
To the Leadership Group and special thanks to Paul Holmes for organizing the function with the Trivia and karaoke side.
To All the Goal Umpires that helped in the Kitchen as dish washers thanks very much
To Mark Osborne as the MC for the night another great job
And finally to all the members and family and friends that attended thank you for your attendance and we hope that you all enjoyed the function
We hope to be able to assist Richard Colman in his quest for Olympic Gold with proceeds from the Function.
NEXT WEEK
We see David House representing the Goalies in the VAFA v VCFL on Saturday so we wish him the very best.
Well it is half way thru the season so Mark and I are going to be sitting down and working out your half yearly reports so when we ask to see you do not be afraid they won’t bad.
WEEK 8
Terry Gillard and Luke McLean represented the GFUL Goal Umpires in the VIC Country Championships at Stawell over the week end and by all reports went very well.
Our Mentors were out in force again on Saturday morning looking after the first year goalies, they have been performing their duties nearly every Saturday Morning.
Young Eli and Zach had their first taste of Goal Umpiring along with Emma and Courtney, the four performed really well so keep working hard and we will watch your progress over the next few weeks.
To Paul Holmes and Ray Stephenson officiating in the TAC match at Skilled on Sunday it just shows things will happen if you are not prepared.
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
A question was put to me over the week end regarding wearing short sleeves and that there is a certain temperature it has to be reached before you go out to umpire in short sleeves.
There is no rule regarding this, it is upto the two Goal Umpires concerned to agree on what shirt they are going to wear.
The B 52’s are still hanging around so those umpires that know they have a problem with the B 52 work on having your arms down by the side.
The Goal Umpires match report form must be completed for each game and returned to Allan by the Thursday night. The one sheet can do for the one venue as long as all Goal Umpires have signed the form
Emma and Courtney officiating at Lara on Saturday morning, after only approx 20min training over two weeks the girls performed really well especially in the movement of positioning in General Play
Good to see everybody wearing sweat band now and actually using the whistle in reserve grade games
THE BAD FROM THE WEEK END
Well I really haven’t got anything to mention in this area except for being prepared with your uniform the night and morning before your match to check that you have everything in your bag. Senior Goal Umpires please take note.
NEXT WEEK
Only two leagues playing again this week end so be prepared to umpire one game or if you are in the country two games
David House and Matthew Robertson Representing the GFUL Goalies at Sale on the Weekend for pool B in the Country Championships all the best guys
Until next week

GOAL UMPIRE COACHING NOTES
WEEK 7
GOOD TO SEE
Michael Vella commenced his Goal Umpiring on Saturday at Newtown in the U/18’s in the terrible conditions. Great job as he was being observed by myself and his Mentor David House.
Matthew Robertson and Steve McDonald doing three games for us at St Albans hope they have thawed out by now.
Stan Pokorny and Robert Steel down to officiate at Skilled Stadium in the TAC match but unfortunately for them the game was transfer to Bell Park, Good performances by both Goal Umpires
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
Goal Umpiring in wet conditions is hard for Goal Umpires as they have nowhere to hide and keep warm, however there are ways and means for a Goal Umpire to Keep Warm
FEET WARM put plastic bags over your feet then your socks this will keep them dry
HEAD Put plastic under your Cap as this will at least stop some water coming thru onto your head
LEGS Wear long johns or tights or water proof pants under your black pants
UPPER BODY Wear a singlet, jumper under you Polo Shirt and Jacket
These are just some ideas that come to mind to assist you in keeping warmer
Goal Umpires not wearing football boots on inclement days maybe they might have to invest in some saves slip sliding all over the place
People asking about wearing gloves, well no, as it is a winter sport and you should be prepared for nay weather conditions
Goal Umpires not wearing their whistles well that was the last Saturday of the amnesty it is part of your uniform for all reserve grade games and must be on your hand at all times
Goal umpires working area is full of water and mud you still give your indications up on the line and wave the flags in the correct position. When Ball is in General Play move back out of the affected area where you might find some drier surface to work in.
After a goal has been waved and you have put the flags away in their holder you then proceed to walk backwards on a 45o angle to your working area.
After a Behind you walk straight back from the post for three steps then decide to line up in the correct zone or position the Full Back is kicking out from
THE BAD FROM THE WEEK END
Goal Umpires not using the zones correctly
The weather was terrible
The Coaching staff sitting in their cars observing while the umpires were out in the elements
OVER THE NEXT WEEK
We welcome two new Goalies to the ranks John Villanti father of Chris and Zach who is injured and not allowed to run as a field umpire for the next five weeks so we have got him in the Goals now
Next week Terry Gillard and Luke McLean travel to Stawell for the first week of the Country Championships all the best boys
DON’T FORGET THE 31ST MAY GOAL UMPIRES SOCIAL FUNCTION
IT IS A MUST THAT YOU ALL ATTEND
GOAL UMPIRE COACHING NOTES WEEK 6
GOOD TO SEE
Young first year Goal Umpire Marcus Feaver stepped up to the line in three matches for the weekend great job
David House again filling the gap of a three gamer on the week ends
The Mentors were out in strength watching their green shirt umpires and by all reports each and every first year umpire performed well
Leadership took control of training last week at late notice and just to remind everybody who the leadership consists of here are the names
Robert Steel
Ray Stephenson
David House
Matthew Robertson
Paul Holmes
The Mentors this year are as follows
Allan Grant
Mark Osborne
Robert Steel
David House
Ray Stephenson
Paul Holmes
Adam Edwick
Matthew Robertson
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
Some umpires are surprisingly very tense when officiating, try to relax you are out their to have some enjoyment in what you are doing
Some very good communication from the Goal Umpires towards the Boundary Umpires, keep this up as we all have a very good relationship with the Boundaries, even the Coaching Staff
Some very good on line positioning from first year umpires to the old faithfulls
THE BAD FROM THE WEEK END
Umpires pulling out of their matches at the last moment, if you know that you are going to be unavailable please put your name in the book prior to 6.00pm on the Tuesday night at training.
I am finding out last that you are unable; to umpire so in future please contact me first so that I can make the changes immediately I won’t bite
OVER THE NEXT WEEK
Appollo Shelton is returning to Goal Umpiring
We have had Four new umpires sign up this Tuesday night 13/5/08
Two females and one young boy and another teenager
Great to See our numbers are getting up to nearly sixty
I have set my target for this year at 56 but we are past this but it would be great if we could have just one week end when everybody is available
A1
GOAL UMPIRE COACHING NOTES
WEEK 5
GOOD TO SEE
New recruit arrived on Tuesday night
Andrew Salter signed up and will commence this week end in the unders
Leadership organizers the social function for the 31st so they are looking at having a huge number from the Goal Umpires attending
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
WHISTLES
It has been a directive that all Goal Umpires must use a whistle in all Reserve Grade Games that do not have GFUL appointed Boundary Umpires.
Unfortunately there seems to be a few Umpires not interested in having the whistle on them during the match, so if you are one of them could you please acquire one and prepare to have it with you and prepared to use it
CROWD CONTROL
At St Mary’s where the practice wickets are located on a match day there are kids playing kick to kick and others just watching the game from there while others are jumping the fence behind the Goals.
For all games played at St Mary’s you should be asking them to stop and leave this area completely, if they do not ask the Field Umpire to speak to the Club Officials to assist in removing them from this area. It is a possible Duty of Care situation where you could injure yourself or the players could get injured running into them
It is the Goal Umpires duty to remove all spectators from the oval within your working area
LEAVING YOUR WORK AREA TO SPEAK TO FIELD UMPIRE
While watching the TAC match on Saturday at Skilled Stadium there was an occasion when one of the Goal Umpires was not sure on the Field Umpires indication where the Goal Umpire ran out to the Field Umpire to ask the Question.
The Goal Umpire then commenced to run backwards but then turned to run forwards back to the Goals to give his indication.
At the time and after the game speaking to the Goal Umpire concerned I explained that you should always run backwards to your working area after moving out.
How ever after speaking to AFL Goal Umpire Colin Hood just after this I found out that they can turn and run forward back to the Goal area with their back to play.
So from now on l have no problem with this practice happening within the GFUL Goal Umpires
THE BAD FROM THE WEEK END
We had four Goal Umpires turn up to officiate at one game, had one Umpire not turn up for his game in the Reserves
Goal Umpires are not to get involved with the length of the Quarters with Club Officials
You are there to record the times and not dispute the length with Officials
WE can only hope that it can only get better
A1
GOOD TO SEE
New recruits arrive on the Thursday night
Welcome to Taylor Lambert and Steve Flower
Steve commences umpiring this week end in the unders and reserves
Taylor is going to commence the following week.
Leadership Group tries to Take Control of Training
The leadership group , David House, Rob steel Ray Stephenson Matthew Robertson and Paul Holmes took training for the first time this season while we concentrated on the first year umpires great job by on the night
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
SWEAT BANDS
Once again it has been noticed that some umpires are not wearing sweat bands, as these are part of the uniform requirements and failure to wear them then both umpires will be penalized for non compliance of this direction
GOAL UMPIRES NOT UP ON THE LINE FOR DROPPING BALL
Well it has happened twice in the last two (2) weeks with Goal Umpires not being up on the scoring line to adjudicate whether the ball has been touched before or after the line.
We have spoken to one of the Goalies involved and will be talking to the other next week, however we as the coaching staff have to be 100% sure that there has been an error if not we will always go the Goal Umpires way
THE BAD FROM THE WEEK END
The weather was terrible in the reserves and seniors and not much better in the unders
We had Steve Williams umpire and put our robbo to be a slow moving object at the other end of the ground Robbo certainly got the message and was extremely impressive in the end
A1
GOAL UMPIRE COACHING NOTES
WEEK 3
GOOD TO SEE
GOAL UMPIRES MAKE DEBUT IN TAC U/18 MATCHES
Congratulations to David House and Matthew Robertson on their selections
It is pleasing to see 60% of the Goal Umpires turning up for training pity we are not able to get 100%.
For those who do not have letters in explaining their unavailability to attend training I guess the others should think about getting theirs in very quickly.
We are becoming very strict with the GFL Senior panel Umpires that they must have reached the required attendance and coaching session program
First Year Umpires debuting in the Reserves and following up in the Seniors
It is awesome to see first year umpires coming up and making the grade so early in their umpiring career.
For the other first year umpires keep striving as your turn will come very shortly
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
The use of the zones is gradually improving with some great efforts form umpires on the week end
Presentation - Uniform which includes your cap and flags
These particular items we look at very closely and it has come to notice that a few not all are not cleaning their flags on a regular basis as some are grey and still carrying the dirt on them from the previous weeks
Caps if you cannot get it cleaned why not think about purchasing another new one from the rooms would be nice to see well presented umpires
THE BAD FROM THE WEEK END
Goal Umpires not being able use the General Play working area correctly
When the ball is outside your scoring area (50m) then the ball is deemed to be in General Play and the Goal Umpire should be lining themselves up with the centre of the Goal line and where the ball is and moving all the time keeping the ball in a straight line
A 1
GOAL UMPIRE COACHING NOTES
WEEK 2
GOOD TO SEE
Second Year Goal Umpires making a stand in the Senior and Reserve Grade now
Richard Colman becoming a Senior Goal Umpire
Recruiting off the street is slowly happening with another new Goal Umpire joining
Noel Hooper crossing over from the Field to the brighter side to become a Goal Umpire
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEK END
Goal umpires not getting under the flight of the Ball.
The Goal Umpires duty is to follow the flight of the ball completely over their head not just to watch go thru the scoring area
Ball dropping down in Goal Square
- If the ball has been kicked and lands in the Goal Square and the likely hood of a score and there are no players attacking the ball then the goal Umpires shall stay in his/her working area and watch the ball pass by him/her. There is no need to come up to the line to straddle.
However I have no problems with Umpires coming up to the line to add a bit a flair
2 If the ball lands in the Goal Square and there are players attacking the ball
Then it is the Goal Umpires duty to be up straddling the Goal or behind line to adjudicate whether the ball has crossed the line without being touched or being touched over the Goal Line.
Ball dropping down on Scoring Line
If the ball has been kicked and it going to land just before or just over the scoring line then the Goal Umpire should be up on the line straddling to adjudicate the score
THE BAD FROM THE WEEK END
UNIFORM
The uniform requirements for Goal Umpires is set out in the hand book but some of you are not adhering to the dress code
Both Umpires are to be dressed in the same uniform before they move out onto the field
That is if one decides to wear short sleeve shirt and the other goal umpires wants to wear long sleeve then one goal umpire has to compromise and yield to wear what the other is wearing
Goal Umpires are directed to wear sweat bands (white)
If the above procedure is not adhered to then the goal umpires will be penalized by the reduction of points
THE WEEKS TO COME
The mentors will be out in force observing and helping the first year umpires more
A 1.
APRIL
ROUND 1
The following is a brief of Observations from round one of the GDFL & BFL.
After much practice with the new zones and flag waving technique it showed that practice makes perfect with the majority being able to perform these with little fuss.
The Zones being 1, 2 & 3 and General Play was great to see you the Goalies concentrating on your movement from one zone to the other.
Great Too SEE.
Flag waving the new technique of when getting your flags from the Goal Post and holding them up in the air until you reach the centre to commence you’re waving was no problem and great to see also.
However there was the down side of some performances with Goal Umpires not using the correct positioning for General play.
GREEN SHIRTERS
It was great to see all the Green Shirters out strutting their stuff on Saturday and showing a lot of promise.
Keep this up guys.
TRAINING
Over the next couple of Weeks will be focusing on positioning again so be prepared for long stays out on the training track so we can get as much practice as possible.
WHISTLES
Under no circumstances are Goal Umpires to purchase WHISTLES as this was not the direction given last Thursday Evening.
Those Umpires only that receive a phone call from myself will trial the use of the Whistle nobody else.
If goal Umpires are herd using whistles without permission then subsequent instructions will be given to them regarding their performances.
OBSERVATIONS
With last week John, Mark and Myself were able to observe a total 0f 24 Goal Umpires not bad for a first up.
Keep looking at the page for weekly updates. |
