Former GFUL Goal Umpires Rewarded with VFL Grand Finals
Written by Bill Fulton

Two former GFUL Goal Umpires have been rewarded for their performances throughout the 2007 season with Grand Final appointments.
Adam Wojcik, in keeping with the very strong Geelong flavour leading up to the AFL Grand Final, was fortunate enough to be involved in the the first leg of what all Geelong supporters hope will be a VFL/AFL double, with his appointment to the  VFL Grand Final between Geelong and Coburg last Saturday.

Youngster, Stephen Williams, who only left the GFUL this year to try out for the VFL, has had immediate success by having already umpired a couple of senior VFL games and will stand between the posts in the TAC Cup Grand Final at the MCG in the curtain raiser to the AFL Grand Final blockbuster between Geelong and Port Adelaide.

The hard luck story must be that of Jarrod King, who, like Stephen, is in his first year with the VFL and has also umpired at senior VFL level, was almost certain to be appointed to the TAC Cup Grand Final along with Stephen, but alas, an injury has deprived him of that opportunity.

Congratulations to Adam on his VFL Senior Grand Final and to Stephen on his TAC Cup Grand Final appointment.    We will all be able to witness his inimitable style and flawless technique on the big screen on Saturday morning.   Commiserations to Jarrod, but there will be plenty more opportunities for someone of his talent in the future.

Sconner Reaches 700
Written by Bill Fulton

GFUL Goal Umpire, Adam “Sconner” Edwick, will umpire his 700th game for the GFUL on Saturday 22nd September, in the Geelong Football League Reserve Grade Grand Final between Leopold and North Shore at Skilled Stadium.   It was touch and go to see if he would crack the 700 game mark before the end of this current season and what better way to finally achieve such a significant milestone, than to do it on the final day of the year in a Grand Final no less.   At only 32 years of age, extremely young for a goal umpire, he has 1000 gamers TC and Szulcy fairly in his sights.   Congratulations Adam and have a great day.

Written by Bill Fulton

VCFL General Manager Umpiring, Brant Dunshea, has resigned from the role after only 16 months in the position.    Brant was presented with what he considers to be an outstanding opportunity in a newly created role within the horse racing industry, where he worked previously, and has decided to accept the position.   Brant will continue in the role of VCFL General Manager Umpiring until the completion of the 2007 football season after which, the VCFL will make appropriate announcements regarding a replacement.

Successful Auction Night
Written by Bill Fulton

Over 100 members enjoyed the last official training night Dinner and Auction on Thursday 6th September.    A sit down BBQ meal was followed by the announcement of the winners of the Jack “Ripper” Robinson Training Awards for 2007.   The trophies were presented to the winners by Mick Robinson, President of the GFUL Life Members Association and brother of the late Jack “Ripper” Robinson who was the GFUL Training Supervisor for twenty years.

The Winners of the Jack “Ripper Robinson” Best at Training Awards were:

Field – Greg Cullen
Boundary – Jake Robertson
Goal – Rick Jones
Junior – Pierce Johnson and Jake O’Brien
Junior Development Squad – Jack Krzywdzinski

The Annual Auction followed the Training Award presentations and after a slow start, Auctioneer Mark “The Fireman” Osborne, fired the gathering up into a bidding frenzy with the end result being the best result we have ever had.

Congratulations to all the Training Award winners, Auction Item Donators and bidding participants who all contributed to a fantastic evening.

New Umpires Change Rooms at Lara
Written by Bill Fulton

Last Saturday, 25th August 2007, Brendan Beveridge and I were invited to attend a Luncheon at the Lara Sporting Club, to celebrate the official opening of their new Sports Pavilion, which included brand new Umpires Change Rooms.   I can remember almost 5 years ago when the old umpires rooms were demolished and we were relocated into temporary change room facilities at the school oval on the far side of the ground with the promise that new rooms would be constructed within 12 months.  Well 12 months has extended to 5 years, however, the wait has been worth it as the rooms are fantastic, providing plenty of space with separate toilet and shower facilities and a separate female change room also.   They are the first rooms built to the GFUL standard which the City of Greater Geelong support and as such, will now be the bench mark for all  new umpires rooms to be constructed or are in the process of being constructed, within our region.  The Lara Sporting Club are to be congratulated for their efforts in complying with our requirements and building the new rooms to the GFUL standard.
